Seven Generations River Documentary

Contemporarily, the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi has used the digital web to engage with the public and advocate for their cultural traditions and rights.

The Pokagon Band website provides public access to resources to citizenship, business and community, government, and culture from the perspective of the band itself. It also provides attachments to the constitution, codes, and ordinances of hunting, fishing, and gathering rights on tribal lands in coordination with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. These documents allow for knowledge of boundaries and licensing for members and non-members alike (“Pokagon Band of Potawatomi: Pokégnek Bodéwadmik”).

The Seven Generation River documentary illustrates the Pokagon collaboration with Detroit Public Television in explaining the band's history and promotion of environmental sustainability for the protection of hunting and fishing resources for all. One of the ways that the Pokagon demonstrate this is by rerouting and slowing down the Dowagiac River (which flows through Pokagon territory) to its original meander in order to maintain healthy fish and flora populations. This project his headed by the band's own Department of Natural Resources (“The Seven Generation River | Great Lakes Now,” 2019).
